Hawaii has one of the most abundant agricultural zones in the US, and now people who like to “eat local” have one more reason to rejoice: the Maui Cattle Company now offers consumers Kula pasture-finished lamb, in addition to beef.

The lamb has to be ordered in advance through the Cattle Company directly or local markets, such as Pukalani Superette. But it will be delivered butchered, wrapped and ready to cook. The next offering date is in 30 days. Still, locally grazed lamb is one more reason for locavores to rejoice.
The Trust for America’s Health released its annual report of obesity and overweight rankings of US states. In F as in Fat: 2009, Hawaii fared well at 5th lowest in the nation for adult obesity at 21.8%. But the news is not so good for Hawaii’s children. Hawaii ranks 37th in nation for overweight kids, at 28.5%. Worryingly across the US, the percentage of obese and overweight children is at or above 30 percent in 30 states, according to the report. Adult obesity rates now exceed 25 percent in 31 states. Rates are highest among Baby Boomers, suggesting this trend may worsen with age.

Since before the presidential election in 2008, political groups have raised questions about the authenticity of Obama’s US citizenship, based on his Hawaii birth certificate, and thus his eligibility to serve as President. Yesterday Hawaii State Department of Health Director, Chiyome Fukino, MD, issued a second statement regarding its authenticity:
“I, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, Director of the Hawai‛i State Department of Health, have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawai‘i State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawai‘i and is a natural-born American citizen. I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago.”
